As an author and then a publisher, I have been on both sides of the fence. When I wear my publisher hat I prefer a more casual meeting. I had a nice conversation with an author yesterday and, having seen only the first chapter of her book and read a short story she had written, I felt confident enough to take her name to the group for consideration. She has been rejected six times...they probably didn't even read her query or sample work. She sent me the letter after the call. It's a good letter but, for me, a couple of casual emails and then the call was all it took. It all depends on that agent/publisher as an individual.
